Only horses that are three years old and are thoroughbreds can compete in The Kentucky Derby. Horses have to compete in a series of prep races to qualify to enter The Kentucky Derby. In each of these races, horses win points for placing in the top four finishers. The 20 horses who have the most points at the end of the prep races can compete in The Kentucky Derby.
